Objects Are as they Appear – Desmond Church

Detroit warmly welcomes you to the opening night of

Objects Are as they Appear

an exhibition of new work by Scottish artist Desmond Church.

18:00- 22:00 Saturday 12th of November

Exhibition continues 13th-19th Nov 12-16, closed Monday the 14th.

Through drawing and sculpture Church’s work will diverge tangentially through concepts of ‘pure seeing’, familiarity with the extraordinary, and what he considers to be the unavoidable lapse into subjective ways of looking.

Desmond Church (b. 1986, Greenock, Scotland) is an artist who currently lives and works in Copenhagen, Denmark. Church habitually creates both suggested and realized proposals for small interventions in the world. His bittersweet drawings often become instruction pieces for installations; miniature worlds created by the artist using the simplest of means but with a beguiling humour that allows us to see the world afresh, and in more vivid and complex terms. Church’s imagined worlds conjure up scenes that veer between the comic and the tragic. In his own words, his vision of the world is “both amusing and pointed on the one hand, cruel and manipulative on the other”.

Desmond Church graduated in 2009 with BA (Hons) Fine Art – First Class from Glasgow School of Art. Previous solo exhibitions include Desmond Church, Northern Gallery for Contemporary Art, Sunderland, UK; 4.6, Artur Art Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark; and Mid-flight, The Cell, Glasgow, UK; ON GO ON, Stald Gallery, Copenhagen, Denmark; Notes for an Exhibition, Margate, UK.
